Food security is a global concern. A complicated one at that. Although the issue is commonly associated with health related concerns, the problems is apparently an intricate problem from food production to distribution and therefore involves availability and safety of food. And this complex problem is apparent in the matter of organic food. For instance, despite overwhelming scientific evidence that organic products and practices are almost infinitely healthier for human and the environment, it is apparently difficult to sustain and expensive and therefore impractical and can be costly in the long-run. In simpler terms, the health benefits may be compromised by economic and production issues.
The Substance of the Organic
In its barest definition, organic food are food that are produced in environment-friendly ways. Among livestock and poultry products, these include meat, poultry, eggs, and dairy products that come from animals that are not given antibiotics or growth hormones. In agriculture, organic food are crops, fruits and vegetables grown without using conventional chemical pesticides, fertilizers from synthetic additives, ingredients, sewage sludge, industrial solvents, or from bioengineering or irradiation processes.
The appeal of these organic is almost evident. One, organic superfood and food products are healthy alternatives and health and well-being are basic human concerns. Simply put, eating organic helps to reduce your body’s total toxic burden and regulates risks of chronic exposure to dangerous poisons in non-organic food diets. Fruits and other products from organic shops in Singapore are also often fresher because it doesn’t contain preservatives. In terms of taste, they taste better than conventional food since. Organic food in Singapore is often sold locally and therefore quickly transported from farm to market, and so there is constant availability of fresh produce in the market. And since they are fresh, they generally taste better than products that have been frozen, for long periods as they are transported across long distances.
Other popular organic products like organic oats are more difficult to cook than regular instant oat meals, but consumers have shown readiness to compromise habits and taste preferences for more important health reasons. It’s healthier for all of us!
The Organic Debate
Organic food products are healthy primarily and precisely because they are produced using methods that comply with the standards of organic farming practices that strive to recycle resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. As such, they do not make use of chemicals such as pesticide, insecticide, and do away with practices that are harmful to man and environment.
Unfortunately though, such practices affect production and productivity. For instance, using chemicals despite its hazards, have been shown to produce greater quantities and therefore help boost farmers’ income and increase product availability in the market. Organic procedures on the other hand produces less volume of yield and therefore less income and limited availability. As such, while the products appeal to a greater consumer base, they may not be favourable to farmers and may be unsustainable in terms of availability. This is more especially true among farmers in remote areas which have to deal with additional production costs such as expensive transportation to major commercial centers, more expensive implements compared with commercially available pesticides on top of more meticulous and tedious farming practices required organic standards.
